When you travel in trains, you always need to book railway tickets. Traveling without a ticket is a crime punishable by law. There is a TTE in each coach to check if everyone in the coach is traveling with a ticket or not. Tickets can be booked in long-distance trains as well as short-distance trains. In long-distance trains, you get a berth on which you can sleep at night. In short-distance trains, you get only a seat to sit and travel.

Railway employees get concessions on their tickets when they travel in trains. Similarly students also get concessions on their tickets. Senior citizens get a concession of 40% on their tickets when they book tickets in any class. They get this concession even when they book tickets online. They have to carry a valid photo ID proof showing their age when they travel in the train. This has to be shown whenever it is asked by the railway officials.

There are one or two unreserved coaches in most of the trains. Those who do not get Indian Railways passenger reservation can take an ordinary ticket and travel in these coaches. Here you are not guaranteed a seat. If you reach early, you may be lucky enough to get a seat. Otherwise you will have to travel standing all through the journey.
